Why would you choose a non-toxic play couch?

Health and Safety

Non-toxic materials and certifications assure that the couch is free from harmful chemicals, toxins, and allergens. Parents prioritize their child’s health and well-being, and by selecting a non-toxic version, they can minimize exposure to substances that may be detrimental to their child’s development and overall health.

Indoor Air Quality

Non-toxic play couches are designed to emit low levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other hazardous substances. These emissions can contribute to indoor air pollution, potentially causing respiratory issues, allergies, or other health problems. Opting for a non-toxic version helps maintain better indoor air quality and promotes a healthier living environment for children.

Sensory Sensitivities

Some children have sensitivities to certain chemicals or materials. By choosing a non-toxic version of The Nugget Couch, parents can minimize the risk of triggering sensory issues or allergic reactions that could arise from exposure to toxins or irritants.

Sustainability and Environmental Consciousness

Non-toxic couches are often made from eco-friendly and sustainable materials. By supporting brands that prioritize sustainability, parents can contribute to reducing their ecological footprint and instilling environmentally conscious values in their children.

Long-Term Investment

The Nugget couch is designed to last for years, with children using it for play, lounging, and relaxation. Investing in a non-toxic version ensures that the couch maintains its safety standards over time, providing peace of mind and longevity in terms of both usage and safety.

Ultimately, parents buy a non-toxic version of The Nugget Couch to provide a safe, healthy, and environmentally conscious play and lounging space for their children. It aligns with their commitment to their child’s well-being and reflects their values of promoting a toxin-free and sustainable lifestyle.

Certifications to look out for when buying a non-toxic play couch

GreenGuard Certification

GreenGuard Certification is provided by UL Environment, a global independent safety science company. It focuses on indoor air quality and ensures that products meet stringent chemical emissions limits. When a product, such as The Nugget Couch, is GreenGuard certified, it means it has undergone rigorous testing to ensure it emits low levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other harmful chemicals. GreenGuard certification assures parents that the couch won’t contribute to indoor air pollution, creating a healthier environment for their children.

CertiPUR-US Certification

CertiPUR-US is a certification program established by the Alliance for Flexible Polyurethane Foam, Inc. It evaluates the environmental and health impact of polyurethane foam used in products like mattresses, upholstered furniture, and cushions. When The Nugget couch has CertiPUR-US certification, it means that the foam used in its construction meets specific standards for content, emissions, and durability. CertiPUR-US certification assures parents that the foam in the couch is free from harmful chemicals like formaldehyde, heavy metals, and certain flame retardants.

OEKO-TEX Fabric Certification

The OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is an internationally recognized certification system for textile products. OEKO-TEX tests for harmful substances in textiles at all stages of production, including the raw materials, the intermediate and end products. When a fabric used in a play couch has OEKO-TEX certification, it means it has been thoroughly tested and found to be free from hazardous chemicals and substances known to be harmful to human health. OEKO-TEX certification ensures that the fabric is safe, non-toxic, and gentle on children’s skin.

Is the Nugget Couch toxic?

Overall, we would say that The Nugget Couch is non-toxic. It ticks two out of the three non-toxic play-couch boxes.

When we first started researching this topic, we assumed the Nugget Couch was toxic. However, we found that it’s actually got some good non-toxic elements to it. The Nugget Couch is GreenGuard and CertiPUR certified but the fabric is not OEKO-Tek certified. They do microsuede, which can contain toxins. They actually don’t give you any more information on the fabric they use.

Other Non-Toxic Play Couch Brands We Recommend

Figgy

Figgy offer a waterproof layer, which can be helpful with little ones but could also contain more toxins. Having said that, Figgy is Oek-Tek and CertiPUT certified but is not GreenGuard certified.

Roo and You

Roo and You are CertiPUR certified but do not comment on being GreenGuard and OEKO-Tek certified.

Kosy Couch

The Kost Couch claims to be made with 20% more foam than other brands and their foam is CertiPUR certified. You can also purchase waterproof covers if you prefer. They however are not GreenGuard and OEK-Tek certified.

Brentwood Home

When comparing all non-toxic play couches, the Brentwood Home play couch seems to outperform the other brands.

They use CertiPUR foam with 20% BioFoam, meaning that 20% of the foam is made from plant-based materials. Brentwood Home products are Greenguard certified and they use fabric made from recycled plastics. This is good for the planet but it is still a synthetic fabric.

What you should research before choosing a non-toxic play couch

Research Brands

Start by researching brands that specialize in non-toxic children’s furniture. Look for companies that prioritize safety, sustainability, and environmental consciousness in their product offerings.

Check Certification

Once you have identified some brands, visit their websites or reach out to their customer support to inquire about the certifications they hold. Ask specifically about certifications like GreenGuard, CertiPUR-US, OEKO-TEX, or any other relevant certifications related to non-toxicity and safety.

Read Reviews and Recommendations

Look for customer reviews, testimonials, and recommendations from trusted sources such as parenting blogs, forums, or websites that focus on child safety and eco-friendly products. These sources may provide insights into specific brands or models of non-toxic play couches that have received positive feedback.

Compare Features and Materials

Assess the materials used in the play couches offered by different brands. Look for couches made from organic, natural, or non-toxic materials. Consider factors such as foam quality, fabric type, and any additional safety features implemented in the design.

Verify Claims

While researching, it’s essential to independently verify any claims made by brands regarding their non-toxicity or certifications. Look for official certification logos or labels on their website or product packaging. Additionally, you can contact the certifying organizations directly to confirm the brand’s certification status.
